Maria Sharapova is a Russian professional tennis player. Maria was given her first tennis racket at the age of just 4. In 1993 at the age of 6 Sharapova attended a tennis clinic in Moscow run by one of the all-time greats Martina Navratilova. (Who recommended professional tennis training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida).

Sharapova has competed on the WTA tour since 2001. Maria won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2004 by defeating Serena Williams at the age of just 17.

16th of May 2019 - Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the French Open with on ongoing shoulder problem. She made the announcement via Instagram. Here’s what she had to say “Withdrawing from the French Open today. Sometimes the right decisions aren’t the easiest ones!!

In better news, I have returned to the practice court, and slowly building the strength back in my shoulder. I’ll really miss you Paris, until next year”.

30th of January 2019 - Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the St. Petersburg Open tournament due to a right shoulder injury. Sharapova was due to play in the all Russian tie against Daria Kasatkina in the second round of the tournament but withdrew due to shoulder ailments. She said "she will meet with doctors and hopes to be playing competitive tennis again as soon as possible". Daria Kasatkina will now play in the quarter-finals.

28th of January 2019 - Maria Sharapova has beat Daria Gavrilova 6-0 6-4 in her first match since the Australian Open. The match was played in her home country of Russia at the St. Petersburg Open. 18th of January 2019 - Maria Sharapova has knocked the defending champion Caroline Wozniacki out of the Australian Open. Maria won the match 6-4 4-6 6-3 in 2 hours and 24 minutes on Rod Laver Arena. To watch the match highlights click here >
