Two-time Wimbledon Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova is out from tennis for at least 6 months after her left hand was wounded in a knife attack at her apartment in Prostejov, Czech Republic.
The 26 year old Czech suffered injuries to all fingers on her left playing hand when she fought of an intruder who acted as a utilities man to gain entry to her apartment.
Police are still searching for her attacker who reportedly took around £155.
Following a successful operation which took 3 hours and 45 minutes, the world number 11 will begin her rehabilitation in six to eight weeks.
But she will not be returning to competitive action for some time, her publicist Kate Spellman has said.
"The best-case scenario is that Petra will be able to return to the tennis court after six months," Ms Spellman said in an email.
Before undergoing surgery Kvitiova said the incident had left her "shaken, but fortunate to be alive".
Kvitova says she is lucky to be alive.
