Naomi Osaka has won her first WTA title: Indian Wells, BNP Paribas Open 2018 by beating Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-2

Unseeded Naomi Osaka has won her maiden WTA Title by beating Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-2 in the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The Japanese youngster, age 20, beat Daria in just one hour and 10 minutes. She dominated on serve to to out-muscle her opponent.

It was the first time two players aged below 21 had played in the final at Indian Wells since Serena Williams, then aged 20, beat 18-year old Kim Clijsters in 2001.

Both players had knocked the top seeded players out of tournament which is played in the desert in California.

Naomi knocked out Agnieszka Radwanska, Sachia Vickery, Maria Sakkari, Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep.

Match facts - 

  • Osaka dropped just one set throughout the tournament.
  • Osaka thrashed world number one Simona Halep in the semi-finals 6-3 6-0.
  • Osaka's ranking went from world No.44 to No.22 (Up 22 places, in the WTA Rankings), as a result of the victory.
  • Osaka is the youngest champion at Indian wells since Ana Ivanovic in 2008.
