Sharapova was playing for the first time since Anastasija Sevastova knocked her out of the US Open 26 days ago.

The 30-year old, Russian and wild card who is ranked 104 won the match 7-6 5-7 7-6.

29th of September 2017 - Wuhun, China – Ashleigh Barty has reached her first Premier 5 level final by beating Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets 6-3 6-0.

28th of September 2017 - Ashleigh Barty has knocked world number 4 Karoline Pliskova out of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhen Open quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals for the first time in her career. The result was 4-6 7-6 7-6.

25th of September 2017 - Caroline Wozniacki beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-0 7-5 to win the Pan Pacific Open, Tokyo.

This was the third time Caroline has won the Pan Pacific Open and her first WTA title of 2017.

This was Caroline's 7th final of the year, she came runner up in the previous sixth but managed to grab this title in Tokyo.

This also means Caroline has now won a WTA title every single year since 2008. She now has 26 career titles.

23rd of September 2017 - Caroline Wozniacki beat Garbiñe Muguruza in the semi finals of the Toray Pan Pacific 6-2 6-0 to reach the final.

10th of September 2017 - Sloane Stephens has won the US Open, she beat Madison Keys in straight sets 6-3 6-0. This was Sloane Stephens first Grand Slam title.

5th of July 2017 - Johanna Konta has gone through to the third round of Wimbledon. She beat Donna Vekic in 3 sets 7-6 4-6 10-8. The match was a classic on Centre Court at SW19, which lasted over 3 hours in the boiling heat.

26th of April 2017 - Maria Sharapova has won her first competitive tennis match in over 15 months by beating the Italian, Roberta Vinci in straight sets 7-5 6-3 at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Maria was banned from tennis for 15 months for taking a banned drug called "Meldonium".

(Her seventh Australian Open title). She has now beaten Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam titles in the Open-era. Serena has now won 23 Grand Slams. However, she still trails Margaret Court who won 24 Grand Slam titles, but 13 of her titles were before women’s tennis turned professional.

16th of January 2017 - Defending Australian Open champion and world number 1 Angelique Kerber survives scare in Melbourne. She progressed to the 2nd round by beating Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-2 5-7 6-2.

16th of January 2017 - World number 4 Simona Halep has been knocked out of the Australian Open in the first round. She was beaten by the American Shelby Rogers in straight sets 6-3 6-1.

13th January 2017 - Johanna Konta of Great Britain beats Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-2 to win the Apia International Sydney. This was Konta's 2nd WTA tour title win.

12th of January 2017 - Johanna Konta beats Eugenie Bouchard to progress to the final in Sydney. British number 1 Johanna Konta was on top form beating the Canadian in straight sets 6-2 6-2. She will now face Agnieszka Radwańska in the final of the Apia International Sydney on the 13th of January at 7.30am (GMT)

10th of January 2017 - The Canadian Eugenie Bouchard has knocked Dominika Cibulkova out of the Apia International Sydney in straight sets 6-4 6-3.

10th of January 2017 - Angelique Kerber has been knocked out of the Apia International Sydney by the young 19 year old Daria Kasatkina.

Update - Petra Kvitova is in good spirits after speaking to the media for the first time since being attacked by an intruder in her home with a knife.

It was great to see Petra smiling with the media. Petra gave a powerful message saying “I do not feel sorry for myself, and I will not look backwards”.

She also said "Yesterday morning, during a session with the doctor, I was able to move the fingers on my left hand. This to me is the greatest Christmas present I could have wished for".

20th of December 2016 - Petra Kvitova will not play tennis for at least three months after surgery following a knife attack at her home.

Surgeons spent almost four hours repairing tendons and nerves on her left hand - her playing hand.

Her spokesman said that considering the damage, “the surgery went well”.

20th of December 2016 - Petra Kvitova has been injured in a knife attack at her home in the Czech Republic.

In a statement Kvitova said “Today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife. In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken but fortunate to be alive.

The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support.”

Maria Sharapova was dropped from the WTA Rankings on the 24th of October 2016.

Johanna Konta is now in the top ten for the 1st time in her career.

Maria Sharapova’s two year doping ban has been reduced to 15 months following her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. (CAS).

Maria will be able to return to the tennis court on the 26th of April 2017.

Maria Sharapova will find out in the first week of October 2016 if her two year doping ban will be overturned.
